Defense stingy in Union men's 73-50 win over Delta State

JACKSON, Tenn. - The Union University men's basketball team posted a 73-50 win over Delta State University Saturday afternoon at Fred DeLay Gymnasium/David Blackstock Court. Union improved to 3-1 overall and 2-0 in the Gulf South Conference. Delta State dropped to 0-3 overall and 0-2 in league play. 
Union has now won three straight games. 
Union held a slim 31-26 lead at the half but exploded with 42 points in the second half. Early in the second half, Union used a 12-0 run to put the game out of reach. Union's largest lead of the game was 27 points late in the second half. 
Union head coach David Niven said, "We have a chance to be a very good defensive team this year. We have some guys that also create matchup problems and when we become better ball handlers, we can win a lot of ball games this year."
Union's defense held DSU to just 24 points in the second half. Union forced 17 turnovers and allowed just 34 percent shooting from the field with 10 steals and four blocks. Union scored 27 points off turnovers in the win.  Union had three guys in double figures led by Boe Nguidjol and Tylandrius Parks with 18 points each. Jalen Johnson added 11 points. Nguidjol added 10 points for his second double-double of the season. Parks was 4-of-6 from 3-point range in the game, including a made three-pointer in three straight possessions in the second half. Union shot 56 percent from the field, 40 percent (6-15) from 3-point range, and 64 percent (9-14) from the free throw line. 
Delta State was led by Kelen Dietrick with 12 points and Lee Cotton with 10 points. The Statesmen shot 34 percent from the field, 23 percent (7-20) from long range, and 46 percent (5-11) from the free throw line. 
Union will step outside conference play for one game Tuesday, November 22 at 6 p.m. versus McKendree University at home.
