Volleyball finishes spring season with win over Sewanee

SEWANEE, Tenn. - The Union University volleyball team posted a 3-1 (25-13, 27-25, 23-25, 25-11) win over Sewanee College Saturday afternoon. Union improved to 6-2 overall, while Sewanee fell to 0-4 overall. 

Union jumped out to an early 8-3 lead in the first set, not looking back to take the lead to the end of set one with a convincing score of 25-13. Union scored as many as five points in row starting at 16-9 taking them to 20-9. In that run Ainsley Hartman had two service aces.

In set two, the momentum was back and forth with both teams managing to score points early. Sewanee went on a small run of their own, scoring five points in a row starting at 6-5 and taking the lead to 6-9. This set was close the whole way, being tied at 25-25, however the Lady Bulldogs managed to pull away scoring two in a row thanks to a kill from Hannah Hampel, and a service ace by Grace Roberts, finishing the set at 27-25.
 
In the fourth set for Union, the Lady Bulldogs scored nine points in a row to open up play, giving them all the momentum they needed to finish this match. Sewanee managed to cut the lead to 15-9 in favor of the Lady Bulldogs, however Union found a way to score the next eight points making it 22-9. The Lady Bulldogs closed out the match at 25-11 with the last point coming from a kill by Grace Roberts.

Union was led by Emily Grace Calhoon with 12 kills, 10 digs, and three blocks. Grace Roberts dominated the net, leading the team in blocks with eight, adding two aces to her line as well. Ainsley Hartman stepped up today with 21 assists leading the team in that category, also leading the team in aces with three. Libero, Sydney Sample led the team with 15 digs propelling the Lady Bulldogs to their final win of this spring season.

This win will wrap up the spring season for the Lady Bulldogs in 2021. Their final record was 6-2 overall and 3-1 in conference play. Haley Ramsey finishes the year as kills leader for the team with 60, Jordan Vick led her team this year with 231 assists. Emily Grace Calhoon handled the net finishing the season with 33 blocks, and Sydney Sample finishes the year leading the team in digs with 96.
