Union volleyball rally falls just short in 3-2 loss to MC

JACKSON, Tenn. - The Union University volleyball team lost 3-2 (25-22, 25-19, 19-25, 23-25, 16-14) Saturday in the final regular season game of the year. Union dropped to 5-1 over all and 3-1 in the GSC Group A play. Mississippi College improved to 6-1 overall and 3-1 in GSC Group A play.

Prior to the match, Union's lone senior, Meghan Delaney was honored for her career at Union. Delaney's career was cut short with an injury earlier this season. Delaney will graduate from Union with a degree in nursing. She was also the most decorated volleyball player for Union since joining NCAA and the Gulf South Conference in 2012-13. The All-American was also named to the GSC All-Decade Team honorable mentioned. 

Union and Mississippi College played close for most of the first set with MC pulling away at the end to win 25-22. The Choctaws controlled the second set, winning 25-19 at the end. 

Union responded to stay alive with a big 25-19 win in the third set. Union trailed early but a late 6-1 run, including three kills from Alyssa Tatsch helped give Union the lead for good. Union scored the final three points of the set to win. 

The fourth set was tight all the way. MC took a 15-13 lead, but then a kill from Laura Rose Gray and two attack errors by MC, and Union regained the lead, 16-15. Back and forth the teams went, pushing the game to a 22-22 tie following a kill from Union's Emily Grace Calhoon. MC regained the lead, but a kill from Jordan Vick tied the game at 23-23. Union took the lead 24-23 for game point, forcing a timeout by MC. Union won the set and tied the match on an attack error by the Choctaws.  

Union started strong in the fifth set, jumping out to a 4-1 lead, and forcing a timeout from the Choctaws. MC stayed close but Union was still able to maintain the 3-point lead at 9-6. Mississippi College then rattled off four straight points to take a 10-9 lead, forcing a Union timeout. Union scored the next three points to lead 12-9, making MC use its final timeout. The teams swapped points, then Union moved to match point at 14-11 on a service ace from Haley Ramsey. MC rallied with three points to tie the set at 14-14. Union used its final timeout. Out of the timeout, MC got back-to-back kills from Kendall Platt to rally for the 16-14 win, taking the match 3-2. 

Union was led by Calhoon with 11 kills while Ramsey added 10 kills. Vick led with 40 assists and 16 digs. Ramsey added 13 digs and led with two aces. Tatsch led with four blocks. 

MC led Union 72-53 in kills and 10-4 in aces. Union led 10-3 in blocks. MC edged Union in digs, 63-62. 

MC was led by Platt with 21 kills. Laurendine added 14 kills and led with 38 assists. Bundy led with five aces, while Davis led with 25 digs.
