CLINTON, Miss. - The Union University women's basketball team posted a 63-32 win at Mississippi College Saturday afternoon. Union, ranked No. 21 in the latest D2SIDA Media Poll an receiving votes in the WBCA Coaches' Poll, improved to 11-3 overall and in Gulf South Conference West play. Mississippi College dropped to 3-8 on the season and in league play.
The win also marked the 650th career victory for head coach
Mark Campbell. Campbell is currently 650-102 (.864) for his career.
Jaelencia Williams also entered the record book with 21 rebounds in the game. She is now tied with Morgan Martin for forth on the all-time rebounds list. Stephanie Clark continues to hold the record at 24 rebounds in a game. The 21 rebounds set a career high for Williams, passing her previous high of 16 rebounds.
The game started extremely slow for both teams. Union scored first with a quick 3-pointer from
Shanique Lucas. However, Union did not hit its second field goal until just over four minutes later. Mississippi College got its first field goal at the 6:58 mark. Union led after a slow first quarter, 9-4.
Union was able to pick up the pace with 15 points in the second quarter to lead 24-10 at the break. Union scored 20 points in the third quarter and 19 in the fourth quarter to pull away.
Union's largest lead was 34 points midway through the fourth quarter.
Union was led by Williams with 17 points and 21 rebounds. It was her sixth double-double of the season and 22nd of her career. Lucas added 15 points. Six other Union players scored in the game.
Sadie Knee led with eight assists. Union 42 percent from the field, 33 percent (11-33) from long range, and 57 percent (4-7) from the free throw line.
Union outrebounded MC 47-38, while MC won the turnover battle 14-8.
Mississippi College was led by Mikeba Jones with 11 points and 15 rebounds. The Choctaws shot 19 percent from the field, six percent (1-18) from long range, and 64 percent (9-14) from the foul line.
Up next for Union is another road weekend, Friday and Saturday, February 12-13 at Delta State.
