HUNTSVILLE, Ala. - The Union University baseball team earned two wins Friday in a doubleheader against No. 24 University of Alabama Huntsville. Union won the first game 3-2 and followed with a win in the second game 17-7. Union moved to 2-3 overall and 2-3 in the Gulf South Conference. UAH moved to 2-3 on the season and 2-3 in league play.
In game one, the Chargers struck first in the bottom half of the first inning, scoring one run that was unearned thanks to a two-out single with a runner in scoring position. In the top of the second inning, the Bulldogs answered with two runs of their own. With two outs in the inning, Patrick Music reached first with a single, stole second, and scored on a single by Jake Baker. Drew Hill was next to the plate in that inning and reached first after being struck by the pitch, moving Baker to second. Trey Frierson singled and score Baker from second, giving the Bulldogs the lead 2-1 after two innings. The pitchers took over and silence both offenses until the top of the fifth inning, when Frierson reached base with a single, and be scored by Britt Netterville. The Chargers didn't score again until the bottom of the eighth, making the score 3-2 with the Bulldogs on top, and that's where it stayed until the remainder of the game. Union was led by Trey Frierson who went 3-5 with three hits, scoring one run, and one RBI. Britt Netterville went 2-4 with two hits and one RBI. Jake Baker was 2-3 with two hits, scoring one run and one RBI. Patrick Music and Josh Bozoian both added one hit to their totals. Walker Adkisson earned the win on the mound, pitching six innings, giving up only two hits, zero earned runs, and seven strikeouts. Parker Shreve got his first save of the year after closing out the ninth inning, pitching one complete inning, and striking out two of the three batters he faced.
In game two, the offense showed up and showed outscoring a season high 17 runs in nine innings of play. The offensive explosion began in the top of the second when Patrick Music singled, scoring both Austin Zeitler and Josh Bozoian. In the same inning, the Bulldogs scored six more runs thanks to RBI from Trey Frierson, Jake Baker, and Austin Zeitler. The Charges answered in the bottom of the second scoring three, making the score after two innings 8-3. Zeitler added to the score total in the fourth inning, after a single that scored Bozoian. Also, in the fourth, the Bulldogs got RBI from Patrick Music and A'Darius Pugh. The outpour of runs continued into the sixth inning with Bozoian scoring another run, and Pugh receiving another RBI. Britt Netterville and Bozoian both earned RBI in the ninth, and the game went final after nine complete innings at 17-7 with the Bulldogs victorious. The Bulldogs were led by Zeitler and Bozoian who both had four hits, and both scored three runs. Bozoian had one RBI and Zeitler had three. A'Darius Pugh, Ryan Lee, Britt Netterville, and Trey Frierson all had two hits. Both Music and Pugh had three RBI's. Luke Williamson got the win on the mound for the Bulldogs, pitching four and a third innings with six earned runs, and three strikeouts. Brandon Maxwell threw an inning and a third with no earned runs and two strikeouts. Cooper Bullough pitched two complete innings giving up no earned runs with three strikeouts, and Spencer Woods closed it out with one inning pitched, no earned runs, and two strikeouts.
Up next for Union will be a road game that will conclude the weekend series, Saturday, February 13 at 1 p.m. versus UAH.
