CARROLLTON, Ga. - The Union University women's basketball team posted a 70-68 win at the University of West Georgia Friday afternoon. Union improved to 11-2 overall and 6-0 in the Gulf South Conference. West Georgia dropped to 4-6 on the season and 1-4 in league play.
Union had a 14-13 lead after the first quarter. West Georgia led by as many as eight points in the second quarter, but
Kieli Robinson and
Bethany Dillard combined for eight unanswered points to tie the game, 27-27, heading into halftime.
The Lady Bulldogs came out strong in the third quarter, outscoring the Wolves 25-17 to set the score at 52-44 heading into the fourth quarter. A three-pointer by
Leah Cauble to open the fourth gave Union an 11-point lead, its largest of the game. West Georgia outscored Union 24-18 in the fourth, but was unable to take the lead, giving Union the win.
Union was led by freshman guard Dillard with 19 points for the second consecutive game. She also had five rebounds.
Jaelencia Williams recorded her fourth double-double of the season with 17 points and 11 rebounds.
Emily Beard Dunnagan scored 11 points while
Shanique Lucas grabbed 11 rebounds. Union shot 38 percent from the field, 39 percent (13-33) from long range, and 69 percent (11-16) from the free throw line.
West Georgia was led by Valencia Carroll with 17 points and Zaria Bankston with 14 points. Ranajah Verdell added a double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds. The Wolves shot 42 percent from the field, 26 percent (5-19) from 3-point range, and 48 percent (11-23) from the free throw line.
Union will be back at Fred DeLay Gymnasium, Blackstock Court Saturday, January 8 at 2:00 p.m. for a GSC matchup again Auburn Montgomery.
