No. 19/12 Union women roll in season opener, 84-48 over Florida Tech

TAMPA, Fla. - The Union University women's basketball team posted an 84-48 victory over Florida Tech Friday afternoon in the Crossover Classic hosted by the University of Tampa. 
Union is ranked No. 19 in the WBCA Coaches' Poll and No. 12 in the D2SIDA Media Poll.
The game started fast for both teams with Union clinging to a 23-22 lead after the first quarter. The teams swapped leads, Union leading by as many as six points early and Florida Tech leading by as many as three. Union's Emily Beard hit a jumper with six seconds left to give Union the quarter lead. 
However, the next two quarters belonged to Union. The Lady Bulldogs outscored Florida Tech 19-5 in the second quarter and 22-6 in the third quarter. Union led 42-27 at the half and held a 31-point advantage (64-33) at the end of three quarters of play. 
A 3-pointer from Leah Cauble with 5:24 left in the game gave Union its largest lead of the game at 39 points, 79-40. Union coasted to the 84-48 win. 
Florida Tech made just 13 field goals in the game, nine of them were 3-pointers. 
Four players hit double figures for Union led by Ashtyn Baker and Beard with 17 points each. Beard hit 5-of-8 three-pointers, while Baker was 3-of-5 from long range. Jaelencia Williams added 15 points and 14 rebounds, while Shanique Lucas scored 14 points. Union shot 45 percent from the field, 39 percent (11-28) from 3-point range, and 87 percent (13-15) from the free-throw line. 
Florida Tech had one player in double figures, Hannah Roney scoring 14 points. The Panthers shot 23 percent from the field, 29 percent (9-23) from long range, and 72 percent (13-18) from the free-throw line. 
Up next for Union will be a match-up with the host team, No. 12 Tampa, Saturday at 2 p.m. central time.
