CLINTON, Miss. - The Union University men's basketball posted a 75-61 victory at Mississippi College Friday night. Union moved to 6-3 on the season and in Gulf South Conference West play. Mississippi College dropped to 0-5 overall and in league play.
Mississippi College opened the game with a 6-2 lead including the first four points of the game. After a 3-pointer from Union's
JC Clausi,
Justin Debuck hit a jumper to give Union lead 7-6 lead. Union kept that lead for the remainder of the night. Union extended its lead to double figures and then following a Clausi 3-pointer with 4:27 left in half, Union held its largest lead of the half, 33-20. MC cut into the lead with an 11-3 run over the final four minutes and trailed Union 36-31 at the half.
Union scored the first four points of the second half to regain control of the game. Six minutes into the second half, another Clausi 3-pointer matched Union's largest lead at 47-34. The Union lead stayed in double figures for the rest of the game. Union's largest lead of the game was 19 points twice in the second half, the final time was 58-39, with 9:58 left. Union cruised to the 14-point win.
Union put five players in double figures on the night led by freshman
Justin Debuck with 18 points. He added eight rebounds and five assists to complete his stat line for the night. Clausi added 14 points, going 4-of-7 from 3-point range.
Dusan Djordjevic with 13 points, while
Tylandrius Parks and
Jeremiah Littlepage with 10 points.
Ousmane Gueye led with 10 rebounds on the night. Union shot 47 percent from the field, 38 percent (6-16) from 3-point range, and 77 percent (23-30) from the free throw line.
Union outrebounded MC 43-29, including 12-11 offensively. The Choctaws won the turnover battle, committing just 11 to Union's 18.
Mississippi College was led by Brandon Boston with 19 points and Antonio Cowart Jr. with 11 points. The Choctaws shot 41 percent from the field, 13 percent (3-23) from 3-point range, and 50 percent (8-16) from the free throw line.
The two teams will play again, Saturday, January 23 at MC at 2:30 p.m.
