Union baseball splits Saturday doubleheader with Maryville

JACKSON, Tenn. - The Union University baseball team posted a doubleheader split Saturday afternoon at Fesmire Field. Union won the first game 6-2 and fell 6-0 in the second game. Union moved to 3-2 on the season, while Maryville opened the season 1-1.

Maryville scored first in the second with a run without the benefit of a hit. The Saints added a second run in the six, again without getting a hit. Maryville was held hitless until two outs in the top of the eighth inning, where a single to right-center broke up Union's combined no-hitter. It was the only hit for Maryville in the game.

Union scored four runs in the fourth and two more in the six. A'Darius Pugh laces a 2-RBI single to center to put Union up 2-1. It was his first at-bat as a Bulldog for the Brownsville, Tenn. native. Austin Zeitler capped the scoring with an RBI double in the second. Zeitler added an RBI single in the sixth to give Union its sixth run.

Walker Adkisson (2-0) started the game, and went six innings, allowing no hits, but walking six batters and hitting four batters. He added four strikeouts. Spencer Woods tossed the next two innings, allowing one hits with three strikeouts and a walk. Sam McMillin tossed the ninth, allowing no runs on while walking three.

Zeitler, Pugh, and Tyler Thomas each led with two hits each. Seitler and Pugh had two RBI each for the Bulldogs.

In the second game, Maryville scored five runs in the third inning with the final four coming on Elbe's grand slam. The Saints added a run in the fourth and that was the end of the scoring for the night. Union was shutout for the first time this season in five games. Both teams managed just three hits, while Union committed four errors in the second game. Four of Maryville's six runs were earned. Ryan Mets (1-1) started for Union, lasting just two innings, allowing four runs, three earned on two hits with three walks, a hit batter, and four strikeouts. Brad Webber allowed the home run to his first batter faced but settled in to pitch two innings, allowing two runs, one earned on one hit, one walk, and three strikeouts. Logan Portis tossed two innings, allowing no runs or hits, striking out three and walking one. Owen Bartholomew tossed a perfect seventh with two strikeouts.

Up next for Union will be a home game, Tuesday, Feb. 11 at 2 p.m. versus Henderson State.
