JACKSON, Tenn. - The Union University men's basketball team fell 76-73 to Christian Brothers University Thursday night at Fred DeLay Gymnasium, David Blackstock Court. Union dropped to 16-12 overall and 11-9 in the Gulf South Conference. Christian Brothers improved to 19-9 overall and 14-6 in league play.
We the loss, Union fell into the eight seed for the tournament. The Bulldogs will travel to top-seeded Valdosta State Tuesday at 6 p.m. central time for the quarterfinal round.
Union scored the first six points of the game and led 10-5 after almost five minutes of play. A 6-0 run for CBU gave the Bucs their first lead of the night. Union responded with back-to-back 3-pointers from
Terrandus Smith and
Tylandrius Parks to regain the lead. Union extended its lead to as many as 12 points in the first half, 29-17, with 5:52 left in the half. However, Christian Brothers stormed back over the final five minutes. CBU outscored Union 15-2 to close out the half with a 32-31 lead.
Early in the second half, Union regained the lead by as many as four points twice. However, CBU rallied again. the game was tied 41-41 with 16:35 left. The Bucs held a slim lead for the next 10 minutes, until Union led briefly, 63-62, with 5:47 left to play. Back and forth over the next four minutes with Union leading for the final time, 70-69 with just over a minute left. CBU got a layup to take the lead for good. Union missed on a shot, but got the offensive rebound. However, an offensive foul gave the ball back to CBU up by on with 30 seconds left. Two free throws later and CBU led 73-70. Union missed on a 3-pointer, and CBU extended the lead to 74-70 after a free throw. Union's Peyton Stovall hit a 3-pointer with .4 seconds left. Union fouled on the inbounds and two free throws by CBU set the final at 76-73.
Union was led by Parks with 20 points and 11 rebounds. Smith added a double-double also with 14 points and 12 rebounds.
Samory Gueye and Stovall added 15 and 11 points respectively. Union shot 41 percent from the field, 36 percent (12-33) from 3-point range, and 75 percent (3-4) from the free throw line.
Christian Brothers was led by Dieball with 32 points. Laravie added 18 and Rudy scored 11 points. The Bucs shot 52 percent from the field, 35 percent (9-26) from long range, and 60 percent (9-15) from the foul line.
Union outrebounded CBu 35-29 and also edged the Bucs in turnovers, committing nine and forcing 10.
