Union women's basketball opens region rankings at No. 1, No. 6 nationally

JACKSON, Tenn. - The Union University women's basketball team opened the NCAA Division II First Region Rankings as the top team in the south region. Union is also ranked No. 6 nationally in both the WBCA Coaches Poll and the D2SIDA Media Poll.

The NCAA D2 Region Rankings is released on the final two Wednesdays of the regular season, and the Wednesday of conference tournament week. The final region ranking is Sunday night, March 10 following all conference tournament and serves as the seeding for the first round of the NCAA D2 National Championships. 

This marks the 13th No. 1 region ranking for Union since moving to active NCAA membership in 2014-15 season. 

The rest of the top-10 includes Florida Southern (SSC) in second, West Florida (GSC) third, Lee (GSC) fourth, Tampa (SSC) fifth, Benedict (SIAC) sixth, Eckerd (SSC) seventh, Embry-Riddle (SSC) eighth, Nova Southeastern (SSC) ninth, and Delta State (GSC) 10th. 

The three tournament champions from the Gulf South Conference, Sunshine State Conference, and Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference will get automatic bids to the region tournament, the other five at-large bids will come from the final region rankings March 10. 

Union has hosted three of the last four NCAA D2 South Region Tournaments, winning its first region title last season. 

Union is coming off a 3-0 week last week and is 27-1 overall and 17-1 in the GSC. Union has clinched at least a share of the GSC Regular Season Title for the fifth time in seven years. Union has a two game lead with just two games left to play. Union travels to Lee Thursday for a rematch versus the only loss of the season.
