Union women's basketball knocks off No. 15/10 Nova Southeastern

CLEVELAND, Miss. - The Union University women's basketball team posted a 77-56 win over Nova Southeastern University on the first day of the South Region Crossover Classic hosted by Delta State University. This was the season opener for both teams. 

Nova Southeastern was preseason ranked No. 15 in the WBCA Coaches' Poll and No. 10 in the preseason D2SIDA Media Poll. Union was just outside the top-25 at No. 26 in the coaches' poll and was No. 20 in the media poll. 

Union was eliminated last season in the opening round of the national tournament by Nova Southeastern. 

Union jumped out to an 8-0 lead and led for the entire game. A layup from newcomer Jaelencia Williams and then back-to-back 3-pointers from Jada Smith and Emily Beard started the game for Union. Union was up 18-11 at the end of the first quarter. Union extended its lead to as many as 18 points, 34-16 in the second quarter, before taking the 36-21 lead into the locker room. 

In the third quarter, Nova cut the deficit to single digits at nine points for one possession, 41-32 with 6:34 left in the period. But Union quickly responded with an 11-2 run to match its largest lead to this point at 18. Union led 54-38 at the end of three. 

In the fourth quarter, Union extended its lead to the largest of the game at 24 points, 77-43 with 1:17 left to play. 

Union was led by Smith and Williams with 23 points each. Smith scored 13 of her points in the first half, while Williams went for 17 second-half point. Williams added 11 rebounds in the game to record a double-double. Kieli Robinson scored 11 points and Beard with 3-of-4 shooting from 3-point range for nine points. Union shot 49 percent from the field, 33 percent (4-12) from long range, and 73 percent (11-15) from the free throw line. 

Nova was led by Jordan Trully with 21 points. Hailey Conley added 16 and Claire McMahon scored 12 points. The Sharks shot 33 percent from the field, 21 percent (5-24) from long range, and 59 percent (13-22) from the free throw line. 

Up next for Union will be a game versus Barry University at 6 p.m. Saturday, November 9, the final day of the classic.
