MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The Union University basketball team was defeated by Christian Brothers University 71-58 Thursday night. Union ended the season 12-16 overall and 6-14 in the Gulf South Conference. The Bucs improved to 20-8 overall and 12-8 in conference play.
The season ended tonight for Union's men. This marked the first season since becoming full members of the GSC for the Bulldogs not to make the tournament. Union advanced to the semifinals each of the first two years, and the quarterfinals last season.
JC Hawkins hit two three's for Union in three and a half minutes, putting Union up 8-4 early. Christian Brothers hit a three of their own to shorten Union's lead to one. The teams played close until CBU hit back-to-back threes to jump up 17-11. Union scored on three straight possessions to tie the game again at 17-17 with 10:18 left in the half. Neither team led by more that three points for the rest of the half with Union leading at the half, 35-32.
Christian Brothers opened the second half with two quick layups to put the Bucs back on top by one. The Bulldogs then had six unanswered points to regain the lead, 41-36. Union led by as many as five points twice in the second half. CBU took the lead for good on a jumper with 12:55 left, 47-46. The Bucs kept the lead but Union stayed close. Union trailed just 57-53 with 7:30 left in the game. Christian Brothers then began to pull away. With 3:27 left, CBU took the first double digit lead of the game, 64-54. Union got as close as eight points down the stretch and CBU's 71-58 final score was their largest lead of the night.
Union was led by Charlie Wilson with 18 points and nine rebounds. KC Goodwin had 15 points. Union was 36 percent from the field, 25 percent (5-20) from beyond the arc, and 79 percent (11-14) from the foul line.
Christian Brothers was led by Adam Dieball with 23 points. Jeff Larkin had 20 points, and Jacob Lyons had 16 points. Christian Brothers was 49 percent from the field, 44 percent (8-18) from three-point range, and 55 percent (11-20) from the foul line.
