ROME, Ga. - The Union University men's basketball team posted a 71-61 win at Shorter University Saturday afternoon. Union improved to 11-14 overall and 5-12 in the Gulf South Conference. Shorter dropped to 3-22 overall and 3-14 in league play.
Union scored the first four points of the game on their way to a quick 9-2 lead after four minutes of play. The nine points came on field goals from four different players, including a 3-pointer from
JC Hawkins. Union maintain a lead for the first 15 minutes of the half with seven being the highest. Shorter stayed close finally took their first lead of the game, 26-25, with five minutes left in the half. The two teams swapped leads five times over the final five minutes, before Shorter took a slim 33-32 lead into the locker room.
Union regained the lead briefly with four straight points to start the second half. Shorter answered with with four straight points to lead for the final time at 37-36 with 17 minutes left. Union's
Charlie Wilson started a 19-3 run for the Bulldogs over the next seven minutes to take control of the game. Shorter managed to get as close as nine points once in the final 10 minutes of play. Union led by as many as 17 points in the second half before taking the 71-61 final.
Five players scored double figures for Union led by Hawkins with 15 points. Wilson scored 13 points, while
Nick Velasquez and
Alex Keel scored 12 each.
KC Goodwin added 10 points. Union shot 45 percent from the field, 36 percent (10-28) from long range, and 79 percent (11-14) from the free throw line. Union out rebounded Shorter 34-32 and committed just 10 turnovers in the game.
Shorter was led by Amonte Potter with 20 points and TayVaughn Major with 18 points. The Hawks shot 37 percent from the field, 21 percent (5-24) from 3-point range, and 95 percent (18-19) from the free throw line.
