HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – The Union University men's basketball team fell at the University of Alabama Huntsville Tuesday night 109-90. Union dropped to 8-7 overall and 2-5 in the Gulf South Conference. Alabama Huntsville improved to 11-5 overall and 4-4 in league play.
The Union men shot 53 percent from the field, hit 15 three pointers at a 44 percent clip, and scored 90 points, but it was not enough. UAH shot 64 percent from the field and 63 percent (22-35) from long range. The Chargers shot an eye-popping 76 percent from 3-point range (13-17) in the second half to pull away from Union.
Union trailed early by as many as eight points, but rallied to take their first lead at 27-24 following one of
Todd Barnes' six 3-pointers. Union extended their lead to as many as eight points, 43-35, with 3:18 left in the half. Alabama Huntsville started heating up and by the end of the first half, pulled ahead 48-46.
Nick Velasquez opened the second half with a 3-pointer to give Union their only lead of the second half, 49-48. UAH then took over. Leading by three points, 59-56, UAH used a 10-0 run to push their lead to double figures for the first time in the game. Now leading by 12 points, 76-64, UAH added an 11-0 run to push their lead into the 20's. The Chargers led by as many as 25 points, 90-65, with 9:14 left in the game. Union continued to shoot well, but could not match the 76-percent shooting by the Chargers in the second half from behind the arc. Union got as close as 14 points late in the game, but fell 109-90.
Union was led by Velasquez with 25 points including 6-of-11 3-pointers. Barnes added 21 points including 6-of-10 from long range.
Pedro Da Silva scored 12 points, while
Charlie Wilson added 11 points.
UAH was led by Ward with 30 points on 8-of-10 shooting from long range. Swalve added 28 points, also 8-of-10 from long range. Elliott scored 21 points and Owens added 17 points.
Up next for Union will be a home game, Saturday, January 13 at 4 p.m. versus No. 15 West Florida.
