UAH pulls away late to eliminate Union men from GSC Tourney

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. - The Union University men's basketball team fell 85-73 Tuesday night in the quarterfinals of the Gulf South Conference Tournament. seventh seeded Union ended their season with a 14-15 record, while Alabama Huntsville advances as the 2-seed with a 22-7 record.

Union is one of only two schools (Delta State) that has send both the men's and women's basketball teams to the GSC Tournament in the last three years. Union has done so in each of the three seasons they have been eligible.

The teams swapped buckets early and both teams were shooting well early in the game. Following a 3-pointer from GSC Freshman of the Year Tray Boyd with 14:50 left in the first half, Union led 17-11, their largest lead of the game. Union led for the majority of the first half, including 29-24 with 6:52 left in the half. However, UAH closed out the final six minutes of the half with an 18-10 run to lead 42-39 at the half. 

In the second half, Union was never able to regain the lead, despite keep the game close for the majority of the half. Union stayed within five points until the Chargers were able to extend their lead to 10 points, 64-54, with 9:18 left in the game. Union responded with an 11-3 run, capped by a 3-pointer from Alex Keel, to cut the deficit to just two points, 67-65, with 5:36 left.  However, the home team used their crowd to help regain momentum and the Chargers outscored Union 18-8 over the final five minutes to advance with the 85-73 win. 

Union led by Charlie Wilson with a game-high 24 points. Ashanti Day scored 12 points and added 10 rebounds. Boyd scored 11 points and KC Goodwin added 10 points. Union shot 47 percent from the field, 38 percent (9-24) from long range and 67 percent (8-12) from the free throw line. Union had 33 rebounds, seven offensive and committed 14 turnovers. 

Alabama Huntsville was led by Troy Saxton with 21 points. Seab Webster added 16 points, Brandon Roberts 14 points, Chayse Elliott 13 points and Justin Ward 11 points. The Chargers shot 55 percent from the field, 50 percent (7-14) from long range and 76 percent (16-21) from the free throw line. UAH grabbed 30 rebounds, two offensive and had just eight turnovers.
