Union men top Concordia 93-81

JACKSON, Tenn. - The Union University men's basketball team defeated Concordia (Ala.) College 93-81 Thursday night at Fred DeLay Gymnasium. Union improved to 6-4 overall, while Concordia fell to 6-3 on the season. 

Tyler Fountain of Concordia scored the first points of the game, but Union's Nick Velasquez responded with a layup. After the Hornets took back the lead at 4-2, Union went on a 9-0 run making the score 11-4. Union hit three 3-pointers in less than a minute to increase the lead to 21-8. Both teams went scoreless for two minutes when Todd Barnes hit a three for Union. Both teams went back-and-forth scoring, but Union led at the half, 52-37. 

Union shot 50 percent from the field in the first half. 

Pedro Da Silva started the second half with back-to-back lay ups for Union and Alex Keel added three points from behind the arc making the score 59-37. Union led 62-40 on a three pointer from Velasquez. Concordia responded with a 20-4 run over the next four minutes to cut Union's lead to six. Union responded with a 12-0 run to regain control of the game. Union maintain a double digit lead for all but one possession in the final 10 minutes. Union hit six-of-eight free throws in the last two minutes to hold off Concordia 93-81. 

Union was led by KC Goodwin with 22 points. Da Silva added his sixth consecutive double-double with 21 points and 14 rebounds, while also recording five blocks. Barnes had 18 points, with Keel posting his first double-double of the season and near triple-double with 13 points, 10 rebounds, and eight assists. Union shot 46 percent from the field, 41 percent (12-29) from 3-point range, and 70 percent (21-30) from the free throw line. 

Concordia was led by Fountain with 16 points. David Freeman added with 12 points, while Josh Williamson scored 10 points. The Hornets shot  39 percent from the field, 28 percent (7-25) from long range, and 78 percent (14-18) from the free throw line.
