DURANT, Okla. – The Union University Lady Bulldog volleyball team dropped both games on day two of the South Central Classic hosted by Southeastern Oklahoma State University. In the first match Saturday, September 3, Union fell 3-2 to East Central University. Southern Arkansas University took down the Lady Bulldogs 3-1 in Union's last game of the South Central Classic. Union drops to 1-3 on the season.
East Central took a quick 2-0 lead, beating the Lady Bulldogs 25-19 and 25-17. Union fought back to win the second two sets 25-22 and 25-16. In the final set, ECU jumped ahead 3-0, but the Lady Bulldogs were able to get back two points to cut the East Central lead to 3-2. Points went back-and-fourth between the two teams, but ECU was able to outlast Union to get the set win, 15-13.
Katie O'Malley led the Lady Bulldogs with 13 kills, followed by
Ceciley Blanchard with 12 kills.
Hannah Huguley added 41 assists to her season totals, and
Kristen Goggin led Union with 14 digs.
The Lady Bulldogs had to fight from behind again after falling behind 1-0 to Southern Arkansas. In Union's second set, the Lady Bulldogs were leading 19-13 when a five point run by SAU brought them within one point. Southern Arkansas was able to tie the set at 21-21, but Union was able to shut down their rally. Union had set point, 24-22, but SAU, again, fought back to tie the score at 24-all. The Lady Bulldogs were able to hold off the threat to get their lone win of the match, 26-24. Union fell in the last two sets 25-21 and 26-24.
The Lady Bulldogs had two players in double-digit kills with 13 kills by
Deja Moorer and 11 kills by
Suheily Colon-Rodriguez. Huguley had a season high 42 assists, while
Audrey Cagle had a season high 20 digs for Union.
Up next, the Lady Bulldogs will travel to Bolivar, Missouri for the Southwest Baptist University Classic. Union will play Friday, September 9, against Oklahoma Panhandle State University at 11:30am and Southwest Baptist at 7pm. Saturday, September 10, the Lady Bulldogs will close out the tournament against Harding University at 11:30am and University of Illinois-Springfield at 4:30pm.
