Union women down West Florida 74-66

JACKSON, Tenn. – The Union University Lady Bulldog basketball team got back in the win column with a victory over the University of West Florida, 74-66.

WHAT HAPPENED
  • Union jumped ahead of West Florida early with 3-pointers from Jada Perkins and two from Chelsea Bodiford. The Lady Bulldogs continued to hold the lead at the end of the first quarter, 18-14.
  • In the second quarter, UWF went on a four point run to get within two of the Lady Bulldogs, but a three pointer from Jada Smith extended the Union lead to 25-20. Another 4-0 run by the Argonauts closed the gap to a shorten the Union lead to 25-24. Later in the second quarter Union was leading 32-27 with seven seconds remaining, but a halftime buzzer beater from West Florida's Alex Coyne cut Union's lead to 32-30 going into the half.
  • In the first half, Union shot 37 percent (11-for-30) from the field, 39 percent (5-for-13) from 3-point range, and 83 percent (5-for-6) from the free throw line. Bodiford led the Lady Bulldgos with 11 points while Fredi Nielsen added six rebounds. West Florida shot 27 percent (8-for-30) from short range, 33 percent (3-for-9) from long range, and 92 percent (11-for-12) from the foul line. The Argonauts were led by Katie Bobos with eight points and Toni Brewer with five rebounds.
  • To start the third quarter West Florida came out to tie Union 32-32, but the Lady Bulldogs were able to break the momentum with a three from Bodiford, and then a four point run to extend their lead to six points, 39-33. UWF then went on a 9-0 unanswered run to take their first lead of the game, 42-39. Union worked their way back scoring eight straight points to take back the lead 53-48. By the end of the third quarter, the Lady Bulldogs held the lead 55-52.
  • Bodiford started the fourth quarter with a bang banking a 3-pointer in the first 10 seconds of the quarter. Union was able to get their largest lead of the night leading West Florida 63-54 after a 5-0 run. UWF would not allow the Lady Bulldogs to extend that lead further, but Union held on to win the game 74-66.
 
STAT OF THE GAME
Union's Chelsea Bodiford set a personal season high with 24 points. Bodiford was just shy of her career high, 26 points, which was set November 19, 2013 against Clayton State University.


TEAM STATS
  • Union shot 37 percent (22-for-59) from the field, 36 percent (9-for-25) from three, and 96 percent (21-22) from the free throw line.
  • West Florida shot 34 percent (22-for-65) from short range, 24 percent (4-for-17) from 3-point range, and 86 percent (18-for-21) from the foul line.
  • The Lady Bulldogs outshot the Argonauts 65-33 in on court points.


PLAYER STATS
  • Chelsea Bodiford led Union with 24 points on the night. Fredi Nielsen posted her fourth double-double of the season with 12 points and 11 rebounds. Sara Lytle and Jada Smith were also in double figure points with each scoring 12 points.
  • West Florida was led by Courtney Meyer with 16 points and nine rebounds. 
 
UP NEXT
Union will host the Valdosta State University Blazers December 17 at 2 p.m. in their final game before the Christmas holiday. The Lady Bulldogs with then be back in action December 28 against Rust College in their final non-conference matchup of the season at 6 p.m.
