JACKSON, Tenn. – The Union University men's soccer team led for the majority of their match versus Upper Iowa University but ended up falling 2-1. Union dropped to 2-4 overall, while Upper Iowa improved to 5-0-1.
Upper Iowa is receiving votes in the latest NCAA DII poll at the No. 27 spot.
Union scored first with a goal in the 15
th minute when
Clayton Martin pounded a header into the back of the net.
Andre Silva provided the assist for the goal.
Union preserved that lead for the rest for the rest of the half and well into the second half. Union outshot UIU 11-8 in the first 45 minutes.
With Union still clinging to the 1-0 advantage, Upper Iowa tied the match in the 68
th minute on a goal from Greg Marshall as he got behind the defense and found a clear path to the net.
With the game seemingly headed for overtime tied a 1-1, Union's goalie
Matt Kesler was given a yellow card in the box that provided Upper Iowa with a PK in the 89
th minute of play. Ryhs Williams converted the PK to give his team the 2-1 lead and one minute and 25 seconds later, the win.
Union outshot UIU 17-14 in the game with both teams getting seven shots on goal. Union was given five cards in the game including one red card to Silva. UIU earned three yellow cards in the physical contest.
Kesler recorded five saves in goal for Union, while Connor Rortvedt had six saves for UIU.
Up next for Union will be the third of four straight home matches when West Florida comes to Union Friday, September 25 for the Gulf South Conference opener at 7:15 p.m.
