Hot shooting lifts Union women past West Alabama 88-62

LIVINGSTON, Ala. – The Union University women's basketball team posted an 88-62 win at the University of West Alabama Saturday afternoon. Union improved to 18-3 on the season and a league best 14-3 in the Gulf South Conference. West Alabama dropped to 10-11 overall and 7-10 in league play.
 
The win was also No. 499 for Union head coach Mark Campbell. Campbell is now 499-69 in this 16th season at Union.
 
Senior guard Amy Philamlee again led the way for Union with 34 points, 19 in the second half. It is the fourth time this year for Philamlee to reach 30-plus points, and the third time to reach at least 34. She scored a career-high 35 in a win at Valdosta State (Ga.) earlier in the season.
 
West Alabama jumped out to a quick 4-0 lead to start the game. Union recovered to lead 6-4 after back-to-back 3-pointers from Philamlee and Amber Rechis. West Alabama led once more at 7-6 and then forced a couple of ties, the last at 14-14 with 9:36 left in the half.
 
Union took the lead for good on another 3-pointer from Rechis. Union outscored West Alabama 22-9 over the final nine minutes of the first half to lead 36-23 at the break.
 
In the second half, Union kept making shots as they pushed their lead to as many as 33 points, 69-36, with 11:56 left in the game. Thompson scored 12 of her 22 points in the second half. Union shot 74 percent from the field in the second half, including 63 percent (5-8) from 3-point range. Union was 53 percent from the field in the game while making half of their 3-pointers (12-24) in the game.
 
Amber Rechis was the only other Union player in double figures, joining Philamlee and Thompson, with 11 points on 3-of-4 three pointers. Union got a pair of 3-pointers from Chelsea Bodiford as a part of her eight points. Philamlee led with seven assists and Kelsey Risner led with six rebounds. Union shot 86 percent (24-28) from the free throw line in the game.
 
West Alabama was led by Britney McCloud with 25 points. Latisha McCullum added 15 points. The Tigers shot 34 percent from the field, 28 percent (5-18) from long range, and 65 percent (11-17) from the free throw line.
