Union men knock off No. 24 West Georgia 88-81

CARROLTON, Ga. - The Union University men's basketball team took down #24 West Georgia 88-81 on their home court Thursday night. The Bulldogs improved to 10-6 in Gulf South Conference play and 16-6 overall. West Georgia fell to 11-5 in conference and 16-5 overall.
 
After falling at Mississippi College on Saturday, Union came out hot against West Georgia, who sat atop of the Gulf South standings heading into the game. Union led the Wolves 23-6 with 13:32 left in the first half and eventually went into the locker room leading 51-37. The Bulldogs shot 51.5% from the field and went 6-11 from behind the arc in the first half while 78.6% from the free throw line.
 
West Georgia came out in the second half and slowly chipped away at the Union lead. With seven minutes left in the game the Wolves went on 12-0 run to lead by two points with 2:22 left. The Bulldogs responded with a ten-point run of their own led by five free-throws from Marterrace Brock, a 3-pointer from Corieon Pearson and a layup from Jordan Montgomery. The run put the Bulldogs up by eight points with 29 seconds left to seal the upset win.
 
Brock earned his first double-double of the year with 25 points and 13 boards while also adding five blocks. Pearson also put 25 points on the board for the Bulldogs while Ashanti Day added 14 and Montgomery had 13. Union finished the game 44.6% from the field an even 50.0% in 3-pointers (10-20).
 
Deonta Stocks led West Georgia with 25 points on the night with Alex Abreu adding another 22 points and eight assists. The Wolves shot 42.4% from the field and hit 17-19 free throws.
