North Alabama run past Union men in home finale

JACKSON, Tenn.- The Union University men's basketball team lost to the University of North Alabama Thursday evening 93-70 to fall to 12-8 in Gulf South Conference play and 18-8 overall. North Alabama improved to 9-11 in conference and 12-14 overall.
 
Union struggled to points on the board from the very first minutes of the game falling behind North Alabama 15-3 less than eight minutes into the ball game. The Bulldogs continued to struggle shooting, trailing as many as 34 points in the first half. Union entered the locker room down 54-23 after shooting only 24.2 percent from the floor.
 
In the second half, Union tried to mount a rally to get back into the game. Union finished with 19 three pointers in the game, including 13 in the second half. The Bulldogs outscored North Alabama 47-39 in the final 20 minutes, but could not overcome the rough first half. Union got as close as 22 points in the second half thanks to 51.6 percent from the field and 59.0 percent in threes for the half.
 
Corieon Pearson led the Bulldogs with 24 points while Jordan Montgomery added 17 points and seven boards. Pedro Faller had 12 points and Marterrace Brock had 11.
 
North Alabama had double digit point totals from five players led by Nathan Spehr with 20 and Marcus Landry with 19. Brandon Herman had a triple double in the game with 10 points, 10 rebounds and 10 assists and Calvin Dade had a double double leading the team with 13 rebounds while adding 13 points. John Fletcher came off the bench for the Lions scoring 14 points.
 
Union has already secured their GSC tournament berth but fell to a tie for fourth in the standings with Shorter with two games to go in the regular season.  The top four teams in the standings at the end of the year will host their first round conference tournament games on Tuesday, March 3rd.
 
The Bulldogs will finish out their regular season with two road games the first coming at Alabama-Huntsville on Saturday, February 21st, at 4:00 p.m. Union will then travel to Memphis to take on Christian Brothers on Thursday, February 26th, at 7:00 p.m. Listen on 93.1 FM or online at www.uuathletics.com/live.
