JACKSON, Tenn. - The Union University women's basketball team earned an 87-63 win over Rhodes College Saturday afternoon at Fred DeLay Gymnasium.
This is the second of three exhibition games for Union. Union fell 88-57 at LSU earlier this week. Union travels to Kentucky for their final exhibition game this year, Sunday, November 8 at 5 p.m.
Union and Rhodes played close for the first two quarters. Union rallied after an early five point deficit of 17-12 to lead 20-19 at the end of the first quarter. Union kept a slim lead in through the second quarter, pushing their halftime lead to 40-34.
In the third quarter, Union pulled away, outscoring Rhodes 24-14 in the 10 minute span. Union put up 23 more points in the fourth quarter to coast to the 87-63 win.
Union dominated the paint, outscoring Rhodes 40-14. Union also got 26 points off 21 Rhodes turnovers. Union's bench contributed 37 points.
All 12 players for Union scored in the game, led by Tiara Caldwell with 15 points and 10 rebounds. Jada Smith added 11 points and led with six assists, while Kelsey Risner scored 10 points. Union shot just 28 percent (5-18) from long range in the game, but made 4-of-9 three pointers in the second half. Union hot 52 percent from the field and 67 percent (16-24) from the free throw line.
Rhodes was led by Hannah Orth with a game-high 20 points including 6-of-7 from long range. Symone Daniels added 13 points and Catherine Eckert scored 10. The Lynx shot 46 percent from the field, 50 percent (10-20) and 69 percent (11-16) from the free throw line.
After Union's final exhibition game this week at Kentucky, Union opens their regular season the Tamps Classic Friday and Saturday, November 13-14.
