MEMPHIS, Tenn. - The Union University women's soccer team lost 2-1 at Christian Brothers University Friday night. The match was for the sixth and final spot in the Gulf South Conference Tournament. Union's season ended with a 4-13-1 overall recorda and 4-7-1 record in the GSC. Christian Brothers improved to 10-6-1 overall and 6-5-1 in league play.
Union trailed early 1-0 after CBU's Mariana Tonelli, assisted by Alex Swanson, scored in the 20th minute of play. The score remained 1-0 at the half. Union responded out of halftime with quick goal. Hannah Hillburn scored on an assist from
Honeye Heydari, just two minutes into the second half. The score remained 1-1 for most of the second half until the home Bucs got the game winner from Ingrid Mello in the 84th minute of play. Sydney Piper had the assist on the game winner.
Despite the close score, Christian Brothers dominated the shots total 13-1, including 5-0 in the first half.
Kristen Francis was solid in goal for Union with seven saves.
Union finished 12th in the GSC standings last year, but vaulted up to seventh in 2015 with a chance in the final game to make their first GSC Tournament. Union looks to continue climbing as they turn focus to 2016.
