Late goals lift Union over Valdosta State

JACKSON, Tenn.- The Union University (4-9-1, 4-3-1 GSC) scored too late goals with less than 1:30 left to take down Valdosta State (3-8-2, 2-5-1 GSC) 2-1 Saturday afternoon.
Valdosta State got the lead in the early minutes of the match with a goal off of a corner kick. Shelby Jennings was in the box for the corner from Ava Scott-Moncrief and was able to sneak a header past the Union goalie in the eighth minute of play.
The Lady Bulldogs looked to even the score in the closing minutes of the first half with a shot from Honeye Heydari, but was knocked away by the Valdosta State goalkeeper.
It looked like the final would hold at 1-0 in favor of the Lady Blazers, but with only 1:30 left in the match freshman Georgia Hopkins took a shot from outside the 18' box that carried over the goalie to tie the score at 1-1. Only 45 seconds later the Lady Bulldogs created another opportunity in the box and Honeye Heydari was able to sneak a ball into the far corner of the net to give Union their first lead of the game with only 35 seconds left on the clock. The late goals came with help from Hannah Hillburn who earned the assist on both plays for a total of five assists in the last three matches.
Union's next contest will be their last home match of the season and with it brings Senior Night festivities. The Lady Bulldogs have five seniors on the squad this year, Bonna Hardee, Carson Hewett, Honeye Heydari, Hannah Miller, and Emily Waggoner. The opponent will be North Alabama with a start time at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday.
