FLORENCE, Ala. – The Union University men's basketball fell 84-63 at the University of North Alabama Monday night. Union dropped to 12-4 on the season and 6-4 in the Gulf South Conference. North Alabama improved to 6-9 overall and 3-6 in league play.
The loss was the second straight for the Bulldogs, dropping Union out of first place in the GSC standings.
Union shot just 35 percent in the loss, including just 17 percent (5-29) from 3-point range in the game. North Alabama also dominated the glass, outrebounding Union 56-19 in the game.
The two teams swapped a pair of baskets early playing to a 4-4 tie through the first three minutes. Then North Alabama took the lead for good. The Lions jumped up by 10 points, 24-14 with 8:02 left in the half. Union stormed back with a 9-0 run to cut the deficit to just one with 6:29 left in the half. However, North Alabama continued to make shots, pushing their lead back to 14 points, 40-26, with 1:59 left in the half. North Alabama led 42-34 at the break.
Union cut the deficit to six points right out of the locker room, but got no closer. North Alabama pushed the lead to double-figures, 49-38, after a 3-pointer with 15:41 left in the game. The Lions never let their lead drop to single digits again, going up by as many as 23 points in the game, before taking the 84-63 final.
Union was led by
Marterrace Brock with 24 points in the game.
Ashanti Day added 11 points and seven rebounds. Union was 10-of-16 (63%) from the free throw line.
North Alabama was led by Jere Vucica with 25 points and 13 rebounds. Nathan Spehr added 19 points, while Calvin Dade scored 14 points and had 16 rebounds. The Lions shot 59 percent from the field, including 63 percent in the second half. They shot 41 percent from long range (7-17), including 4-of-6 in the second half. The Lions also shot 65 percent from the free throw line (11-17).
