Box Score JACKSON, Tenn. – The Union University women's basketball team posted a 76-60 win over the University of Alabama in Huntsville Saturday afternoon at Fred DeLay Gymnasium. Union improved to 11-2 overall and 7-2 in the Gulf South Conference. Alabama Huntsville dropped to 7-8 on the season and 4-5 in league play.
Union shot 43 percent (12-28) from long range including nine made threes in the first half as they earned the win. Union also drained 86 percent (24-28) from the three throw line to help seal the game late. Both teams combined for 51 free throws in the game (23 attempts for UAH).
The game started slow with neither team able to get on the board for the first two and a half minutes. Finally, a layup from Huntsville's Jasmyne Reeves put UAH up 2-0 at the 17:26 mark. That was the only lead of the game for the UAH Chargers. Union answered on the next position with their first points, a 3-pointer from
Kelsey Risner. Risner scored seven of Union's first 14 points of the game.
The game was tied for the final time at 5-5 when Union took the lead for good on a layup from
Amy Philamlee. Philamlee's 23.3 points per game ranks No. 1 in the Gulf South Conference and No. 2 in all of Division II entering the game.
Union pushed their lead up to 10 points, 22-12 with six minutes left in the half. After UAH was able to cut the deficit down to just five points, Union heated up from long range. Union closed out the half by making 5-of-6 three pointers to lead by as many as 13 points in the first half. Union held an 11 point lead at the break, 31-20.
In the second half, Union quickly pushed the lead up to 17 points. Union led again by 17 points 49-32 with 14:13 left in the game. Alabama Huntsville then started a comeback, going on a 10-0 run to cut the Union lead down to seven points with 9:39 left in the game. Huntsville got as close as five points, 56-51, with 4:53 left to play. However, Union regained control, outscoring the Chargers 20-9 over the final five minutes of play.
Union was put on the line 20 times in the second half, making 18 free throws to seal the win. Risner led Union with 10 points in the first half, while Philamlee scored 15 of her game-high 22 points in the second half. Philamlee was 10-of-10 from the free throw line in the second half.
Union was led by Philamlee's 22 points and six assists. Risner posted her sixth double-double of the season with 15 points and 11 rebounds.
Amber Rechis scored 11 points while
Emily Sissom posted a solid stat line with nine points and five assists. Union shot 43 percent from the field, 43 percent (12-28) from long range, and 86 percent (24-28) from the free throw line.
Alabama Huntsville was led by Halle Jarnagin with 13 points and 10 rebounds. Dina Saunders added 12 points, Elder Chandler scored 11 points, and Alyssse Bishop scored 10 points. The Chargers shot 43 percent from the field, 18 percent (3-17) from 3-point range, and 74 percent (17-23) from the free throw line.
