Box Score JACKSON, Tenn. – The Union University women's basketball team earned a spot in the NCCAA MidEast Region Tournament Championship game with a 100-58 home win Friday over Bluefield (Va.) College. Union improved to 21-6 overall, while Bluefield ends the season 14-16.
Union ran out to an 11-2 lead a little over three minutes into the contest. A layup from
DeAnna Thompson gave the Lady Bulldogs their first double digit margin of the game 18-7. The Lady Bulldogs went up 33-11 on an
Amy Philamlee layup 10:40 before halftime.
Astrid Huttemann gave Union their largest advantage of the half after laying the ball in for a 57-21 score at 1:19. Union held a 57-24 lead at intermission.
The lead never fell below 30 points in the second half for the Lady Bulldogs. Union pushed their advantage to 40 with a free throw from
Kelsey Risner midway through the half. A pair of free throws by
Christina Coney gave Union their biggest lead of the game 93-46 with 5:09 to go. The Lady Rams Asia Wheeler finished the scoring with a layup for the 100-58 final.
Philamlee and Rechis led the Lady Bulldogs balanced scoring with 16 points each.
Astrid Huttemann contributed 15 points while
Kelsey Risner added 13 and
DeAnna Thompson 10. The Lady Bulldogs shot 64 percent (16 of 25) from 3-point range. The long distance effort was their best since making 72.7 percent on 8 of 11 from long distance in a 74-52 second round NAIA National Tournament win over Biola (Calif.) College in Frankfort, Ky. March 17, 2012.
Janee Simmons scored 23 to pace the Bluefield offense. Whitney Smith added 10 points for the Lady Rams.
Second seeded Union now will play top-seeded and Gulf South Conference foe Lee University in the NCCAA MidEast Region Tournament Championship game Saturday evening at 7:00 p.m. in Fred Delay Gymnasium. Lee beat Tennessee Temple University 82-47 to move to the championship showdown. Lee also won both regular season meetings versus Union this season.
