Box Score HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – The Union University women's basketball team posted a 78-68 win at the University of Alabama Huntsville Thursday night. Union improved to 19-6 on the season and 14-5 in the Gulf South Conference. Alabama Huntsville dropped to 15-10 overall and 10-9 in league play.
Union used a strong first half to lead 45-30 at the half. However, Union had to fight off a rally by UAH that tied the game 62-62 with 4:27 left.
Union led by 16 points, 60-44 at the 13:10 mark in the second half. UAH then rolled off an 18-2 run that tied the game at 62-62. Union junior guard
Amy Philamlee answered that run with a 3-point play, converting on a layup and making the free throw after being fouled. Union never trailed in the game and were only tied the one time. Union quickly regained control, pushing their lead back to nine points over the next three minutes, 73-64. Union was 7-of-8 from the free throw line in the final minute to seal the 10 point win.
LaTesa McLaughlin opened the game for Union with a 3-pointer. Union led 9-4 after two more 3-pointers, one from
Astrid Huttemann and another form McLaughlin. Union led 19-16 with 8:41 left in the first half. The Lady Bulldogs then posted a 15-0 run to lead 34-16 with 5:10 left. After a bucket form UAH ended that run,
Amber Rechis for Union drained a three pointer to give Union their largest lead of the game at 19 points, 37-18.
Union was led by Philamlee with 20 points and a team high six assists. McLaughlin and
DeAnna Thompson each added 16 points in the game. Thompson posted career highs with 16 points and nine rebounds. Union shot 42 percent in the game from the field, including 55 percent from the field in the second half. Union was 8-of-22 (36%) from long range, including 7-of-13 (54%) in the first half. Union drained 83 percent (20-24) of their free throws.
Alabama Huntsville was led by Jordan Smith with 20 points. Jasmine Hammon added 19 points, while Shannon Steinert scored 14 points. The Chargers shot 36 percent from the field, 32 percent (8-25) from long range, and 67 percent (8-12) from the free throw line.
