Box Score JACKSON, Tenn. – The Union University women's basketball team fell 60-46 Saturday afternoon to Delta State (Miss.) University at Fred DeLay Gymnasium. Union dropped to 18-6 on the season and 13-5 in the Gulf South Conference. Delta State improved to 20-4 overall and 15-3 in league play.
Union stormed out of the gate in front of a full house at "The Fred".
Amber Rechis drained a 3-pointer to start the scoring as Union ran out to a 28-12 lead over the first 14 minutes of play.
However, that is where Union's offense when cold. Union did not score for the final six minutes of the first half. Delta State closed out the half with a 16-0 run to tie the game 28-28 at the half.
In the second half, the shooting woes continued for Union as Delta State continued their run with eight straight points. Union finally snapped the 24-0 run by Delta State with a pair of free throws from
Amy Philamlee with 15:39 left in the game.
Union rallied back to take a 38-37 lead with 12:29 left. But the lead was short lived. Delta State continued to pressure Union's shooters. The Lady Statesmen pushed out to their largest lead of the game, the 60-46 final.
Delta State outscored Union 48-18 over the final 26 minutes of the game.
The 46 points for Union was a season low. Their two lowest totals of the year have both come to Delta State (57-51 loss at DSU in January). The last time Union scored lower than 46 points was 44 points in a loss to Clayton State early last season.
Union was led by Philamlee and Rechis with 14 points each. Rechis scored 11 of her points in the first half, while Philamlee scored 12 of her total points in the second half. Union shot just 24 percent from the field, only 21 percent (7-33) from long range, and 77 percent (13-17) from the free throw line.
Delta State was led by Chelsey Rhodes with a game-high 19 points, including 12 in the first half. Seneca Walton scored 13 points while Chadisty Hickman added 10 points. The Lady Statesmen shot 42 percent from the field, 29 percent (2-7) from 3-point range, and 80 points (16-20) from the free throw line.
Up next for Union will be a road game at Alabama Huntsville Thursday night at 5:30 p.m.
