Union women survive at home with 71-63 win

JACKSON, Tenn. – The Union University women's basketball team posted a 71-63 win over Christian Brothers University Thursday night at Fred DeLay Gymnasium. Union improved to 18-5 on the season and 13-4 in the Gulf South Conference. Christian Brothers dropped to 12-11 overall and 8-9 in league play.
 
Christian Brothers scored the first six points of the game on their way to a 10-2 lead over the first five minutes of play. Erica Burgess scored eight of the 10 for the visiting Lady Bucs. Christian Brothers continue to push Union as they led by as many as nine points, 18-9, at the 10:05 mark of the first half.
 
Union slowly began to rally, cutting the deficit to one point, 24-23, with five minutes to play in the game. But Christian Brothers held the lead, moving up by six points, 31-25. But Union was able to close the half with five straight points, including a 3-pointer from Amber Rechis, to cut the halftime deficit back down to one point, 31-30.
 
Union freshman Chelsea Bodiford saw 14 minutes of playing time, scoring nine points on three 3-pointers in the first half. Union's leading scorer Amy Philamlee played just six minutes because of foul trouble.
 
After not having the lead at all in the first half, Union was finally able to take their first lead, 34-33, on a pair of free throws by Shelby Ashcraft at the 18:46 mark. Union trailed for one last time 42-41 with 15:34 left, but a again it was Ashcraft to put Union on top for good. Union led by as many as 10 points in the game, 67-57 with 1:58 left for taking the 71-63 final.
 
Both Philamlee and Shelby Ashcraft were held scoreless in the first half of play, but both responded in the second half. Philamlee ended up leading Union in scoring with 15 points. Ashcraft was second with 13 points. Bodiford finished with 12 points on 4-of-6 3-pointer, while LaTesa McLaughlin added 10 points. Union shot 39 percent from the field, 25 percent (6-24) from 3-point range, and 85 percent (23-27) from the free throw line.
 
Christian Brothers was led by Breanna Ridgell with a game-high 26 points. Burgess finished with a double-double with 15 points and 11 rebounds. Ashley Schaefer added 11 points. The Lady Bucs shot 38 percent from the field, 15 percent (2-13) from long range, and 71 percent (15-21) from the free throw line.
 
Up next for Union will be their final regular season home game of the season, a Saturday afternoon 4:00 p.m. meeting with NCAA DII No. 18 Delta State (Miss.).
