Union men fall 70-59 to Christian Brothers

JACKSON, Tenn. – The Union University men's basketball team fell 70-59 to Christian Brothers University at home Thursday night. Union dropped to 11-12 on the season and 7-10 in the  Gulf South Conference. Christian Brothers improved to 14-9 overall and 10-7 in league play.
 
Union fell behind early as Christian Brothers maintained a double digit lead for the majority of the game winning 70-59.
 
Union got a layup from AJ Roberts to tie the game 5-5 in the opening minutes of action. Christian Brothers scored the next nine points to take a 14-5 lead. Two layups from Corieon Pearson and an Ashanti Day dunk pulled the Bulldogs within five 16-11 at the 10:11 mark of the first half. The Buccaneers pushed the lead to 23-11 at 13:25 as Harry Green made four free throws and Trey Casey, who had 32 points in the first meeting against Union this season, scored his only points in the half on a 3-point shot. A Roberts layup with 4:33 made the score 28-20. Christian Brothers took a 33-23 lead to halftime.
 
Eric Leisey grabbed two rebounds and made a layup early in the half to trim the margin to seven, 36-29. Casey hit his second 3-point basket of the game at 15:38 to complete an 8-2 spurt raising the score to 44-31. A Ryan Fleming layup gave the Buccaneers their largest lead of the game 51-36 with 13:08 to play. Roberts playing in one of his final games in Fred DeLay Gymnasium drilled a 3-point bucket at 7:55 to draw the Bulldogs within six, 54-48. Christian Brothers went up 62-48 on a Drew Hildreth jump shot with 3:40 to go. Union rallied cutting the score to 64-56 with 43 seconds remaining. Christian Brothers hit all six of their free throws in the final 36 seconds to claim the win 70-59.
 
Day and Roy Bullock led Union with 16 points each. Day snared a career high 16 rebounds. It was the first double digit rebound game for Day since reeling in 11 on Jan. 11, 2014. For the fourth time in the last five games Union hit less than 40 percent from the field.
 
Sidy Sall had 17 points and 11 rebounds for the Buccaneers. Cory McArthy added 16 points and Hildreth finished with 13. Christian Brothers hit 44 percent (8-of-18) from 3-point range. Union sank only 7-of-31 (22 percent) long distance attempts. The Buccaneers outrebounded the Bulldogs 42-36.
 
Union will attempt to end the home portion of their schedule with a victory on what is both Senior Day and Homecoming at 6:00 p.m. on Saturday against No. 19 Delta State.
