Union women claim 63-55 win over West Georgia

JACKSON, Tenn. – The Union University women's basketball team picked up their fourth consecutive win, all in Fred DeLay Gymnasium, in a 63-55 game over the University of West Georgia Saturday afternoon. The victory moved the Lady Bulldogs to 14-4 on the season, 9-3 in the Gulf South Conference. The Wolves are now 4-13, 2-9 in GSC action.
 
Shelby Ashcraft scored the first four points in the opening minute for Union. The Lady Bulldogs took an 8-3 advantage on layups by Amber Rechis and Amy Philamlee. A 6-0 spurt by Union made the score 14-5.  Two free throws from Marion Lemonnier brought West Georgia within five, 16-11 at 8:17. Astrid Huttemann sank a 3-point basket to give Union a 23-13 lead, their largest lead of the half. West Georgia used a 5-1 run for a 24-18 score. Lemonnier hit a layup with :18 to go to trim the Union edge to 29-24. DeAnna Thompson grabbed an offensive rebound and released a shot that went through the net before the halftime buzzer sounded. Thompson was fouled on the play and sank the free throw to give Union a 32-24 lead at intermission. Union was helped by 10 second chance points to only two for West Georgia in the opening half.
 
Union held game high leads of 15 points at 39-24 and 41-26 before West Georgia fought back. The Wolves went on a 15-0 run to tie the game 41-41 with 13:32 remaining. Union missed six shots in a row and went more than five minutes without a field goal. Lemonnier put in a pair of free throws at 11:15 to give West Georgia their only lead of the game 46-45. Union regained control of the contest powering in front with a 14-3 run. LaTesa McLaughlin made a layup to finish the spree that gave the Lady Bulldogs a 59-49 edge. A layup by Seandre Lee and free throws from Lemonnier put the score at 59-53 with 1:31 left. The last four Union points in the last :17 were delivered from the free throw line. The Wolves got an offensive rebound putback as time expired from Taylor Turgeon for the final points in the 63-55 contest.
 
Huttemann topped the scoring column with a game high 20 points for Union. Philamlee tossed in 15 points and McLaughlin 14. West Georgia was led by Lemonnier with 20 points and Lee added 14. Union had season lows for attempts (7) and makes (3) from 3-point range. The Lady Bulldogs connected on 42.9 percent from 3-point range. West Georgia outrebounded Union 42-32.
 
Union travels to North Alabama for a Tuesday evening game in Flowers Hall at 6:00 p.m. North Alabama beat Shorter 66-53 Saturday to improve to 11-6 overall and 6-5 in GSC play. Jennifer Towne led the Lady Lions with 14 points and 10 rebounds. Lauren Faris had 13 points for the home team.
