Union women top West Georgia 80-67

JACKSON, Tenn. – The Union University women's basketball team posted an 80-67 win over the University of West Georgia Saturday afternoon at Fred DeLay Gymnasium. Union, who is receiving votes in the USA Today Sports/WBCA Coaches' Poll, improved to 9-1 on the season and 5-1 in the Gulf South Conference. West Georgia dropped to 7-4 overall and 2-3 in league play.
 
Two of the top five scorers in the GSC were on display in this game, including Amy Philamlee of Union and Taylor Beverly of West Georgia. They did not disappoint as both players finished with 27 points each, including each having 18 points at the half.
 
Union scored first on a basket from DeAnna Thompson. But after almost four minutes of play, West Georgia led 8-7. A 3-pointer from Emily Sissom put Union up for good, also starting a 9-0 run for the Lady Bulldogs. Union led by as many as 13 points in the first half, 29-16 with just over seven minutes left to play. However, West Georgia fought back to cut their halftime deficit to just six points, 44-38.
 
In the second half, West Georgia got as close as four points once, earlier in the half. But it was Union's conference-best offense pulling away. Union stretched their lead out to as many as 19 points two times, with the latest coming 80-61 with four minutes left. Union did not score in the final four minutes, but had enough to cruise to the 80-67 win.
 
Union was led by Philamlee's 27 points and 12 assists for her fourth double-double of the season. Thompson recorded her seventh double-double with 24 points and 13 rebounds. Thompson scored 15 points in the second half. Kelsey Risner was just shy of her sixth double-double with 12 points and nine rebounds. Union shot 45 percent from the field, 35 percent (12-34) from long range, and 67 percent (8-12) from the free throw line.
 
West Georgia was led by Beverly's 27 points and 13 rebounds. JaDechia Hill added 10 points for the Wolves. West Georgia shot 40 percent from the field, 31 percent (9-29) from 3-point range, and 57 percent (8-14) from the free throw line.
 
Union is off until January 3 when the team travels to West Florida.
