JACKSON, Tenn. – The Union University women's basketball team posted a 79-60 win over Mississippi College Thursday night at Fred DeLay Gymnasium. Union improved to 6-1 on the season and 2-1 in the Gulf South Conference. Mississippi College dropped to 4-3 overall and 0-3 in league play.
The Choctaws of Mississippi College opened the game with a 3-pointer. Union tied the game on a 3-pointer from
Amber Rechis. Rechis his 4-of-7 three pointers on the night. The teams when back and forth for the next nine minutes. Mississippi held their last lead of the game 13-12 with 11:38 left to play in the half. Union posted an 11-0 run to lead 23-13 with 8:44 left in the half. That 10-point lead was the largest lead of the half for Union as they took a 38-31 lead into the locker room.
In the second half, Union quickly pushed their lead to double figures, leading by as many as 16 points, 58-42 with 14:37 left in the game. Mississippi College posted one last rally to cut the deficit to six points, 60-54. However, Union responded to regain control. Union extended their lead back to a game-high 23 points, 79-56, with 3:23 left before taking the 79-60 final.
Union was led by
DeAnna Thompson with 24 points, including 15 in the second half. Rechis added 19 points, while
Amy Philamlee scored 14 points.
Kelsey Risner led with nine rebounds. Union shot 44 percent from the field, 32 percent (11-34) from long range, and 67 percent (12-18) from the free throw line.
Mississippi College was led by Kristen Sampson with 18 points. Allie Hill and Ashley Minor added 10 points each. The Choctaws shot 36 percent from the field, 42 percent (8-19) from 3-point range, and 91 percent (10-11) from the free throw line.
Up next for Union will be a home game Saturday at 2:00 p.m. versus Delta State (Miss.). Delta State is the defending conference regular season champions and were voted by the coaches to finish first this season. Union was picked second. The game can be heard live on 93.1 FM or online at
