JACKSON, Tenn. – The Union University men's basketball team earned a 75-67 exhibition with over Williams Baptist (Ark.) College Saturday at Fred DeLay Gymnasium. This was also Homecoming for Union.
Williams Baptist scored the first two points of the game, starting a back-and-forth game for the rest of the first half. Williams Baptist led by as many as three points, while Union held a five-point first half advantage twice. Union led 32-27 before Williams Baptist cut the halftime scored to 32-29 in favor of the Bulldogs.
In the second half, Williams Baptist took a brief 37-36 lead just over two minutes into play. But a layup by
Ashanti Day put Union up for good. Union stretched their lead out to as many as 15 points in the second half on three occasions. The final time was 73-58 with 1:35 to play. A late flurry by Williams Baptist, including back-to-back 3-pointers from Aaron Hamby set the final at 75-67.
Union was led by
Pedro Faller with 17 points including five 3-pointers.
Corieon Pearson scored 15 points, while
Marterrace Brock and Day each added 14 points. Union shot 42 percent from the field, 32 percent (11-34) from long range, and 80 percent (12-15) from the free throw line.
Williams Baptist was led by James McClain with 18 points and 11 rebounds. Abel Yekeh added 15 points and 11 rebounds, while Tevin Howard scored 10 points. The Eagles sot 41 percent from the field, 44 percent (10-23) from long range, and 30 percent (3-10) from the free throw line.
Up next for Union will be two season opening road games at the Shorter Classic November 14-15.
