JACKSON, Tenn. - The Union University women's basketball team broke the 100 point mark for the first time this season and improved to 2-0 after defeating Tennessee Temple University100-71 Saturday at Fred DeLay Gymnasium. Tennessee Temple dropped to 2-2 on the season.
In the first half,
Amber Rechis and
Kelsey Risner led the team with 14 points each. Rechis went 4-5 from behind the arc and Risner added four threes of her own. The Lady Bulldogs shot 46 percent from the field and led 53-37 at the half.
In the second half, Union continued to make shots as they hit 47 percent from the three-point line and 43 percent from the field in the final 20 minutes.
Rechis led all scorers with 25 points as she was 7-of-8 from the three-point line. This was the third most points scored by Rechis in a game at Union (30 last season, 26 as a sophomore).
Union had three players earn a double-double including Risner with 20 points and 14 rebounds; making this Risner's second double-double in two games this season. Senior guard
Amy Philamlee added 20 points and 12 assists, and forward
DeAnna Thompson had 14 points and 20 rebounds. Union was 20-of-27 (74%) from the free throw line.
The Lady Bulldogs hit their 18
th 3-pointer of the game with 10 minutes to play. The Union record for 3's in a game is 19. However, Union did not make a three pointer in the final 10 minutes, missing the record by one.
Union out rebounded TTU 56-32.
Tennessee Temple was led by Amanda Rector with 17 points and Kristiana Purvis with 16.
This game wraps up play for the Lady Bulldogs until after Thanksgiving, as the team will travel to Ft. Lauderdale, Florida to take part in the Nova Southeastern Classic. The team will take on Barry (Fla.) University Friday, Nov. 28 at 3 p.m. central time, and the host team and No. 4 ranked Nova Southeastern Saturday, Nov. 29 at 1 p.m. central time.
