Union women shutdown Christian Brothers 69-38

MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The Union University women's basketball team posted a 69-38 victory at Christian Brothers University Thursday night. Union improved to 10-3 on the season and 5-2 in the Gulf South Conference. Christian Brothers dropped to 7-6 overall and 3-4 in league play.
 
Union's defense was strong in this game, holding the home Lady Bucs to just 19 points in each half. The Lady Bucs managed just 31 percent shooting from the field and only 18 percent (2-11) from long range.
 
It was the second straight win for Union, and for the second straight game, the margin of victory was more that 30 points (80-45 win vs. Valdosta State 11/11).
 
Union's leading scorer Amy Philamlee opened the game with her only 3-pointer of the game. Astrid Huttemann followed with one of her three 3-pointers to put Union up 6-0. Union never trailed in the game as the Lady Bulldogs had a double-figure lead (15-4) just eight minutes into the game.
 
Christian Brothers cut the deficit to eight points, 21-13, with eight minutes left in the half. However, Union regained control, posting a 15-4 run to lead by 19 points, 36-17. Union held a 37-19 at the half.
 
Union drained a couple more 3-pointers to start the second half, LaTesa McLaughlin sank one of her four 3's on the night followed by another from Huttemann. Union pushed the lead into the 20's and never looked back. Union led by as many as 33 points twice in the second half, 64-31 and 66-33. The Lady Bulldogs cruised to the 69-38 win.
 
Union was led by McLaughlin with 16 points, including 4-of-5 from 3-point range. Huttemann added 15 points including 3-of-5 from long range. DeAnna Thompson posted her career high with Union with 12 points and six rebounds. Philamlee finished with nine points and a game-high nine assists. Philamlee has dished out 16 assists in the last two games. Union shot 45 percent from the field, 45 percent (9-20) from 3-point range, and 55 percent (12-22) from the free throw line.
 
Christian Brothers was led by Erica Burgess and Ashley Schaefer with seven points each. The Lady Bucs added 50 percent shooting (10-20) from the free throw line.
 
Up next for Union will be a second straight conference road game at Delta State (Miss.) Saturday at 2:00 p.m. Union (second place) trailed Delta State by two games in the league standings.
