Union women’s soccer ties Christian Brothers to open season

JACKSON, Tenn. – The Union University women's soccer team opened the 2013 season with a 0-0 double overtime tie against Christian Brothers University Friday night at Smith Memorial Soccer Complex. This was the season opener for both squads.

In front of a crowd of 211 fans from Jackson and Memphis, both teams missed on several quality shots as neither team found the back of the net. The non-conference opener between the two Gulf South Conference foes went two overtimes.

Kayleigh Patterson led the Lady Bulldogs with four shots, followed by three from Dionna Linn. Alex Bickenbach had four shots for Christian Brothers and Carly Downing had two. The Lady Bucs had a 13-7 shot advantage over Union in regulation. In extra play, Union recorded four shots to only one for Christian Brothers. Overall Christian Brothers outshot Union 14-11. 

Emily Waggoner was in net for Union and recorded four saves.  Robyn Wade gathered five saves for the Lady Bucs as both goalies played all 110 minutes.

These two teams meet again October 11 in GSC play in Memphis, Tenn. Union is at home for the second match of the season, Monday at 7:00 p.m. against Trevecca Nazarene (Tenn.).
