Union women's soccer slips in 2-0 decision at #18 Cumberland

LEBANON Tenn. – The Union University women's soccer team fell to defeat for the first time this season, after being upended 2-0 by NAIA No. 18 Cumberland (Tenn.) University. The game was the third in six days all on the road for the Lady Bulldogs. Union is now 2-1-2 on the campaign. Cumberland improves to 5-1-0.

Union goalkeeper Emily Waggoner was tested early and often in the first half as she faced 12 Cumberland shots. At the 37:53 mark of the first half Cumberland got on the scoreboard with a long goal into the right corner of the netting from Meaghan Lyons off a Taylor Nay pass. The score remained 1-0 at halftime. Cumberland tacked on a second goal in the 57th minute when Rhianne Parsons escaped with the ball amid a cluster of players at the top of the penalty box and knocked it into the frame for a 2-0 advantage.

In the game, Kayleigh Patterson (three) and Dionna Linn (two) were the only Union players to attempt more than a single shot. For the contest Union managed nine shots, including just two in the second half. Cumberland racked up 21 shots, 12 in the first half. Union held a 5-1 advantage in corner kicks. 

The Lady Bulldogs have a week off before their next match. The University of North Alabama travels north to play Union University at the Smith Memorial Soccer Complex at 4:30 p.m., Sept. 25.
