COVINGTON, Ga. - The Union University soccer team picked up a goal in each half en route to victory, 2-0 on Sunday afternoon at the University of West Georgia. Union is now 2-0-2 overall and 1-0-1 in Gulf South Conference play. West Georgia is 1-4-0 on the season and 1-1-0 in the GSC.
Alex Taylor booted the Lady Bulldogs in front, 1-0 with a penalty kick goal in the 42nd minute. The score stood 1-0 at halftime. Less than five minutes into the second half Kayleigh Patterson provided Union with an insurance goal off a Madison Purdy pass in the 49th minute for a 2-0 Lady Bulldogs lead. The lone save by
Union goalkeeper Emily Waggoner happened in the 59th minute to stop a West Georgia scoring chance.
Union outshot West Georgia 10-5 in the match. Each team took two corner kicks. The two by Union were in the first half, while West Georgia's came in the closing half.
The Lady Bulldogs continue their early season three-game road trip playing at Cumberland (Tenn.) University on Wednesday with a 3:00 p.m. kick. The Union junior varsity women's team opens the soccer action with a 1:00 p.m. match Sept. 18 against Cumberland in Lebanon, Tenn.
