VALDOSTA, Ga. - The Union University women's soccer team played their first road match of the season Friday at No. 25 Valdosta State (Ga.) University. Union played the Blazers to a 2-2 double overtime tie. Union is now 1-0-2 on the season and 0-0-1 in the Gulf South Conference. Valdosta State is now 2-0-1 overall and 0-0-1 in league play.
The first half was nearly a scoreless 45 minutes. However, Valdosta State broke through with a goal from Zahimara Fantauzzi on a free kick assist from Shelby Jennings with less that two minutes left in the half. The Blazers added to their lead with a second goal just six minutes into the second half. Erin Hill scored from 25 yards out on an assist from Abbi Edwards.
Then, just three minutes later, Union's Kayleigh Patterson put the Lady Bulldogs on the board with a break away goal. And in the 69th minute, Union tied the game with a goal from Alex Taylor.
Valdosta State outshot Union 6-2 in the first half, 6-3 in the second half, 2-0 in the first OT, while Union took the only shot in the second overtime. Valdosta State led the shots category for the match 14-6.
Union's Emily Waggoner played all 110 minutes in net, allowing two goals and recording eight saves. Olivia Mills for the Blazers also stayed in net for all 110 minutes, allowing two goals with three saves.
Up next for Union will be another conference road match September 15 versus West Georgia.
