CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. – The Union University men's basketball team fell 75-69 to host Tennessee Temple University in the semifinals of the National Christian College Athletic Association (NCCAA) MidEast Region Tournament. Union ends their season at 8-19, while Tennessee Temple improved to 21-11.
The win for Tennessee Temple was their 12
th straight victory on the season. Union closed out the regular season playing some of their best ball of the season, winning five of their last 10, including five straight home games. However, Union dropped to 0-13 on the road this season with Friday's loss.
Over the first six minutes of the game, Union stormed out to their largest lead of the game at 13 points, 19-6. However, Tennessee Temple quickly cut the deficit down to four points thanks to a 11-2 run. Union held a slight lead for the next several minutes, until the Crusaders took the lead 32-30 with just over three minutes to play in the half. The lead swapped three more times until Union took a 38-36 lead into the locker room.
In the second half, Union went up by as many as five points early, 43-38. But the rest of the game belonged to the home team. Over the next seven minutes, Tennessee Temple went from five down to up by 10 points following a 17-2 run. Union got as close as two points several times, including the final time at 66-64 with two minutes left. But the Corey Sanders of the Crusaders was 7-of-8 for his team in the final minute of play to seal the win for his team.
Union was led by
Corieon Pearson with a game-high 23 points. Dani Marti added 20 points and 11 rebounds, while
Anthony Freeman scored 11 points. Union shot 38 percent from the field, 32 percent (7-22) from long range, and 77 percent (10-13) from the free throw line.
Tennessee Temple was led by Sanders with 17 points. Travaris Clarke and Rashaud Bell added 11 points each. Five other players had at least six points. The Crusaders shot 42 percent from the field, 44 percent (7-16) from 3-point range, and 64 percent (18-28) from the three throw line.
