Union basketball teams fall in regular season finale

CARROLLTON, Ga. - The Union University basketball teams lost at the University of West Georgia Saturday in the final regular season game of the year. The Union women lost 70-61, finishing in a tie for the best record in the Gulf South Conference standings with Delta State (Miss.). The Union men lost 72-61, finishing in a 3-way tie for eighth place with West Georgia and West Alabama.

In the women's game,Union led 5-3, but did not lead again the rest of the half as West Georgia led 35-31 at the break. Union managed a brief 44-43 lead with 14 minutes left in the game after a 3-pointer from Amber Rechis. But West Georgia regained the lead and did not trail again. The nine point advantage at the end was the largest lead of the game for the Wovles. Union was led by Christina Coney with 24 points. She was the only Union player in double figures.

The Union men trailed by eight at the break, 34-26, after not leading at all in the first 20 minutes. Union managed to tie the game at 46-46 with just under 10 minutes to play, but never was able to take a lead. Union trailed by as many as 12 points in the game. Union was led by freshman guard Roy Bullock with 18 points. Union got 15 points from Corieon Pearson, 13 points from Anthony Freeman, and 16 rebounds from Dani Marti.

Up next for Union will be their respective NCCAA MidEast Region Tournament. The men play in Chattanooga, Tenn. with the women's tournament in Bluefield, Va.
