JACKSON, Tenn. – The Union University women's basketball team posted a 79-50 win over Christian Brothers University Saturday afternoon at Fred DeLay Gymnasium. Union improved to 15-6 on the season and a league best 10-3 in the Gulf South Conference. Christian Brothers dropped to 5-15 overall and 2-10 in league play.
A Union trio consisting of
Christina Coney,
Astrid Huttemann, and
Amber Rechis combined for 58 of Union's 79 points. Coney led all players with a game-high 23 points and 10 rebounds. Huttemann finished with 18 points with four 3-pointers, while Rechis added 17 points including five 3-pointers. These where the only players in double figures for Union.
Union scored first before the Lady Bucs tied the game at 2-2. Union took the lead for good on a 3-pointer from Huttemann. Union quickly moved up by 10 points, 14-4, and led by as many as 19 points in the half. Union took a 42-24 lead into the break.
In the second half, Christian Brothers cut their deficit down to 11 points, 46-35, with 13:40 left in the game. But Union quickly regained control and led by 23 points, just six minutes later. Union the 29-point lead at the game's end was the largest of the game for Union.
Union shot 49 percent from the field, 41 percent (12-29) from 3-point range, and 92 percent (11-12) from the free throw line. Union outrebounded Christian Brothers 34-25 in the game.
Christian Brothers was led by Samantha Reeves with 20 points. Candis Clear added eight points. The Lady Bucs shot 43 percent from the field, 29 percent (5-17) from long range, and 50 percent (3-6) from the free throw line.
Up next for Union will be a second straight home game, Saturday, February 16 versus North Alabama at 2:00 p.m.
