ROME, Ga. – The Union University men's basketball team posted a 91-85 win at Shorter University. Union improved to 5-3 on the season and 1-1 in the Gulf South Conference. Shorter dropped to 3-5 overall and 0-2 in league play.
The road win for Union snapped a 14-game losing streak that included all 13 road games last season. Union's last road win was a 104-56 win at Trevecca Nazarene (Tenn.) February 23, 2012.
Shorter scored the first four points on their way to a 13-4 lead over the first 2:11 of the game. Union kept their deficit in single digits as they slowly began to chip away. After tying the game a few times, Union took their first lead of the game, 36-34, on a dunk by
Miguel Martinez. The teams swapped baskets over the next few possessions and Union held another lead, 41-40, with 57 seconds left. Shorter responded with a basket from Steve Jonson to regain the lead and a 3-pointer with five seconds left from Brock Rowan to go up 45-41 at the half.
In the second half, Union opened with a 3-pointer from
AJ Roberts, sparking a 16-3 run over the first six minutes to take a 57-48 lead. Shorter cut the deficit to one point, 61-60, with 10:45 left, but Union never gave up the lead. Union stretched their lead out to as many as 14 points, 79-65, with two and a half minutes left. Shorter drained two late 3-pointers and 3-free throw foul late to cut into Union lead Union made 10-of-12 free throws in the final 1:10 to seal the win.
Union was led by
Corieon Pearson with a game-high 29 points, including four 3-pointers. Roberts scored 18 points with three 3-pointers. Union had a pair of double-doubles from two freshmen, one from Martinez with 12 points and 10 rebounds and the other from
Ashanti Day with 11 points and 15 rebounds.
Roy Bullock added 10 points. Union shot 46 percent from the field, 35 percent (9-26) from long range, and 72 percent (18-25) form the free throw line.
Tonight marked the first time this season that Union did not make at least 10 3-pointers in the game. Union hit nine.
Shorter also put five players in double figures led by Brandon Pullman with 20 points. Jordan Jacks posed a double-double with 17 points and 11 rebounds. Brock Rowan scored 15 points, Travis Jones added 11 points, and Kurtis Woods scored 10 points. The Hawks shot 46 percent from the field, 33 percent (10-30) from behind the arc, and 63 percent (15-24) from the free throw line.
Union continues their road trip with a game at West Georgia Friday at 6:30 p.m. This will be the final game until they return to action January 6 with a home game versus Lee (Tenn.).
