JACKSON, Tenn. – The Union University women's basketball team pulled away in the second half for a 76-52 win over Bellarmine (Ky.) University. Union improved to 6-1 on the season, while Bellarmine dropped to 3-3.
Bellarmine jumped out to an 11-0 lead on Union to start the game. Union missed their first nine shots in the game, but finally scored on a layup from
Kelsey Risner at the 14:50 mark. Bellarmine led again by 11 points, 17-6 with 13:10 left in the half. Bellarmine made 5-of-7 three pointers to start the game. The Knights made just one 3-pointer in the remainder of the game.
Over the next eight minutes, Union outscored Bellarmine 24-3 to go from down 11 to up by 10, 30-20, with 4:52 left in the half. Union led again by 10 points in the first half, 34-24, before taking a 34-29 lead into the locker room.
In the second, Union quickly pushed the back to double figures with and 11-1 run to go up 15 points, 45-30, with 16:11 left in the game. Union maintained the comfortable double-digit cushion for the rest of the way. Union led by as many as 26 points twice, 66-40 with 4:04 left, and 76-50 with 25 seconds left.
Union outscored Bellarmine 42-23 in the second half thanks to improved shooting from the field. The 52 percent shooting in the final 20 minutes was up from just 38 percent in the first half.
Union was led by
Astrid Huttemann with 16 points, including 4-of-6 from 3-point range.
Christina Coney added a double-double with 12 points and 11 rebounds. Freshman guard
Tymeria Franklin added 11 points, while Risner scored 10. Of the four players in double figures, only Huttemann was a starter. Union got 34 points on the night from the bench. Union shot 44 percent from the field, 36 percent (9-25) from long range, and 79 percent (11-14) from the free throw line.
Bellarmine was led by Destony Curry with 11 points including two 3-pointers. Mariah Gador added eight points and a team high seven rebounds. The Knights shot 32 percent from the field, 27 percent (6-22), and 50 percent (10-20) from the free throw line.
