No. 16 Drury edges Union ladies on the road, 62-59

Box Score

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. – The Union University women's basketball team lost their first game of the season Saturday evening at NCAA DII No. 16 Drury University, 62-59. Union dropped to 3-1 on the season, while Drury improved to 6-0.

Union was looking to knock off their second NCAA ranked team on the road in as many tries after winning 74-65 at then No. 3 Clayton State November 19.

Union was again short-handed, playing with just seven players for the third straight game. Christina Coney was medically cleared today but only played the final two minutes after a Union player fouled out of the contest.

The Lady Panthers of Drury, sparked by a large home crowd, jumped out to a quick 9-2 lead to start the game. Drury led by as many as nine points three different times with the latest coming 18-9 at the 12:27 mark of the first half. Union then came alive, posting a 9-0 run to tie the game at 18-18. Over the final nine minutes of the half, the lead changed hands six times to go along with six ties. Union took a couple of three point leads, including 32-29 following a 3-pointer from Tymeria Franklin late in the half. However, Drury's Lauren McCurry answered with a 3-pointer to tie the game at 32-32 going into the half.

Like in the first half, Drury took control of the game early in the second half. Drury stretched their lead to as many as 10 points four different times, with the latest coming 58-48 with 4:15 left in the game.

However, Union once again battled back. Union posted a 9-0 run to cut the deficit to just one point, 58-57, with 1:01 left. But it was Drury answering on the next possession with a basket to stop the run. A pair of free throws from each team set the final at 62-59.

Union was led by Amy Philamlee with 18 points. LaTesa McLaughlin added 15 points, while Kelsey Risner added a double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds. Union shot 38 percent from the field, 33 percent (6-18) from 3-point range, and 82 percent (13-16) from the free throw line. Union made just 1-of-6 three pointers in the second half.

Philamlee was named to the all-tournament team as she scored 33 points for Union in two games.
