Union men’s basketball falls 99-88 at Florida Tech

MELBORNE, Fla. – The Union University men's basketball team dropped a second straight game in the Florida Tech Thanksgiving Classic. Union lost 99-88 to host Florida Institute of Technology in the consolation game Saturday afternoon. Union fell to 3-2 on the season, while Florida Tech improved to 7-1 overall.
                                    
Union trailed by 14 (53-39) at the half, and by 22 points (76-54) with 10:18 left in the game. The Bulldogs rallied back to make things interesting late, getting as close as nine points, 95-86, following a 3-pointer from AJ Roberts. But Union got no closer as Florida Tech was able to hold off the Union rally for the 99-88 win.
                                        
The first 10 minutes of the game were back and forth with three ties and nine lead changes. Union held their final lead of the game, 19-18, with 11:56 left in the half. However, Florida Tech outscored Union 33-20 over the remainder of the first half.
 
Union shot well from the field (49%) and long range (34%), including a fifth straight game for Union to make at least 10 3-pointers. However, for the first time this season, Union was out-rebounded (45-38), including 20-12 offensively. Union also lost the turnover battle 18-11.
 
Union put five players in double figures led by Roberts with 19 points. Ashanti Day posted his third double-double in five games with 16 points and 14 rebounds. Roy Bullock added 16 points, Pedro Faller scored 14 points, and Corieon Pearson scored 12 points. Union shot 49 percent from the field, 34 percent (11-32) from long range, and 73 percent (11-15) from the free throw line.
 
Florida Tech was led by Chris Carter with a game-high 35 points. Four other players reached double figures including Jermaine Jackson with 16 points, Derick Pope with 11, while Corbin Jackson and David Usic added 10 points each. The Panthers shot 49 percent from the field, 25 percent (7-28) from 3-point range, and 58 percent (14-24) from the free throw line.
 
Up next for Union will be a home game Saturday, December 7 vs. Concordia (Ala.) at 4:00 p.m.
